The Essentials: Winter Car Cleaning

Before we dive into the details, let's gather the essential items you'll need for your winter car cleaning:

Snow Foam: An effective pre-wash product that loosens and removes dirt and salt residue from your car's surface.

Winter Car Shampoo: A gentle yet powerful shampoo designed to protect your car's finish from winter elements. Coupled with a Microfibre Wash Mitt: A safe and gentle mitt to clean the exterior surfaces of a vehicle.

Wheel Cleaning Solution: A dedicated product to effectively clean your wheels, removing brake dust and road grime. Used with a Wheel Brush.

Window Cleaning Solution: Keep your windows crystal clear for safe driving in low-visibility conditions.

Quick Detailer: A convenient product for an instant shine and an extra layer of protection for your car's exterior.

Step-by-Step Guide: Winter Car Cleaning Process

Pre-wash with Snow Foam:

  • Start by giving your car a thorough rinse with a pressure washer or hose. This step is essential for removing loose dirt, road grime, and the salt buildup that's common during winter.
  • Use a foam cannon or lance to apply the Snow Foam evenly, ensuring it covers the entire vehicle.
  • Allow the Snow Foam to dwell for a few minutes, softening the grime, making it easier to rinse off.
  • Rinse the foam thoroughly using a pressure washer or hose. This step sets the stage for a more effective and safe wash.

Winter Car Shampoo:

  • Use a 3-bucket wash method. This is a technique designed to minimise the risk of scratching your vehicle’s paint. You have 1 bucket for car shampoo, 1 to rinse your wash mitt and 1 dedicated to your vehicle’s wheels.
  • Gently wash your car with a dedicated car shampoo, focusing on one section at a time.
  • Use a high-quality microfibre wash mitt/pad to minimize the risk of scratching your car's surface.
  • Pay close attention to areas where salt and road debris tend to accumulate, such as the wheel arches, lower panels, and door sills.
  • Rinse each section immediately after washing to prevent the soap from drying on the surface.

Window Cleaning:

  • Use a glass cleaning solution to keep your windows crystal clear, even in challenging weather conditions.
  • Apply the solution to a glass-specific cleaning cloth, my personal preference is a waffle weave style.
  • Wipe the windows in a circular motion for thorough cleaning, then follow up with a horizontal and vertical wipe to eliminate streaks.

Tyre and Trim Care (Including Wheels):

  • Maintain the appearance of your tyres and wheels with a dedicated wheel cleaner.
  • Apply the cleaner to a wheel brush or dedicated wheel cleaning tool.
  • Scrub the wheels thoroughly, paying attention to brake dust and grime buildup, as well as in between the spokes and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Rinse the wheels thoroughly, leaving them looking as good as new.
  • You can also use a dedicated tyre & rubber cleaner and a tyre brush for an extra clean looking wheel.
  • Making sure to rinse any cleaning solution thoroughly from your wheels, tyres and trim.

Protecting Your Car from Winter Elements

Winter Waxing:

  • Give your car an extra layer of protection with a high-quality wax.
  • Apply the wax using a wax applicator pad in a circular motion, then let it haze.
  • Buff off the wax with a clean microfiber cloth to reveal a protective and glossy finish.

Tyre and Trim Care:

  • Maintain the appearance of your tyres and trim with a dedicated tyre and trim dressing.
  • Apply the dressing to a foam applicator pad and spread it evenly on your tyres and trim.
  • Wipe off any excess dressing to prevent sling and ensure a clean look.
Winter Interior Care:
  • Protect your car's interior from the wear and tear of winter by using interior cleaning products.
  • Vacuum the interior thoroughly, including the carpets, seats, and floor mats.
  • Use a dedicated interior cleaner to wipe down surfaces, including the dashboard, seats, and door panels.

Bonus Tips for Winter Car Care

Protect the Undercarriage:

  • Prevent rust and corrosion by protecting your car's undercarriage, particularly vulnerable to road salt.
  • Apply an undercarriage spray or rust inhibitor as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer.
Winter Storage Tips:

If you're storing your car during the winter months, follow our tips to ensure it's protected.

  • Park your car in a dry, insulated, and well-ventilated garage if possible. You ideally need to keep the vehicle away from the elements but somewhere that has air movement to help remove any condensation that builds up.
  • Consider using a car cover to protect it from the elements if you do not have access to a garage.
  • Always ensure you keep your detailing products in a warm place. Many detailing solutions will be ruined if they freeze or even get close to freezing. Simply keeping a box in your heated house or garage can save you having to repurchase 100’s of pounds worth of detailing gear!
Regular Maintenance:
  • Keep your car in top shape with regular maintenance, even during the winter, it is probably even more important at this time of year!
  • Check and maintain proper tyre pressure. Tyre pressures can have a huge impact on grip levels!
  • Inspect your vehicle's fluids and top them up as necessary. Remember to pick a screen wash solution that is suitable for the temperatures you will expect in your area.
  • Keep your car's battery charged and in good condition. Cold weather can drain a battery fast!
